It was named after the hermit Saint<br>Simon (Sam&#8217;an), a shepherd from northern Syria, who became a monk after a<br>revelation in a dream. Following Saint Simon&#8217;s death in 459 , the Emperor<br>Zenon ordered that a cathedral be built where the saint used to pray.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"485\" height=\"368\" src=\"https:\/\/nayatours.net\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/stsimeon7.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-177\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nayatours.net\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/stsimeon7.jpg 485w, https:\/\/nayatours.net\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/stsimeon7-300x228.jpg 300w, https:\/\/nayatours.net\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/stsimeon7-150x114.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 485px) 100vw, 485px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The layout was original, centering on the famous column from which Saint Simon<br>used to preach. It was then called<br>&#8220;Qal&#8217;at Sam&#8217;an&#8221; (Simon&#8217;s Citadel).
